What Is Breast Tomosynthesis/3D Mammography?
Breast tomosynthesis, (more commonly referred to as 3D mammography) is a groundbreaking and life-saving technology approved by the FDA in early 2011. It enables our radiologists to view the inside of the breast layer by layer, which increases the visibility of fine details by minimizing the appearance of overlapping tissue.
How Does 3D Mammography Work?
During a 3D mammogram, multiple low-dose images known as “slices” of the breast are acquired at different angles. The procedure is done in conjunction with conventional 2D mammography and is performed at the same time. The 3D technology provides our radiologists with the ability to view a mammogram in a way that was never before possible.

Why is 3D Mammography So Important?
3D mammography has revolutionized the way that medical professionals go about detecting breast cancer as early as possible. The technology is the newest, most sophisticated and precise screening tool available in the market place today. In addition, 3D mammography can detect abnormalities in breast tissue that are beyond the reach of traditional screening methods, including invasive tumors. It also delivers a much better quality of detail and accuracy than traditional mammography that provides women with a greater sense of peace of mind. Lastly, the 3D technology decreases the recall rates for our patients, resulting in fewer return visits and additional tests.
The Senographe Pristina* – Life Changing New Technology
Bergen Imaging Center was proudly the first freestanding women’s imaging center in Bergen County to install Senographe Pristina*, GE Healthcare’s new breast tomosynthesis—a life-saving technology—designed with 3D imaging technology.
This breast tomosynthesis system uses the lowest radiation dose of any 3D mammography equipment in the industry. This vitally important piece of equipment has received outstanding reviews from mammogram patients across the country.
The Senographe Pristina* was designed to greatly reduce the amount of anxiety that most women feel with traditional mammogram machines. Many patients report feeling a refreshing sense of calm just by seeing the new device for the first time. Its flowing shapes and soothing lighting create an inviting atmosphere for women as they prepare for their mammogram. Traditional hand grips have been replaced with comfortable armrests, so that patients are much more relaxed during the experience.
We are very pleased to be able to offer our patients the innovative technology of 3D mammograms available through the GE Healthcare Senographe Pristina* It is our goal to make breast tomosynthesis with digital mammography the standard protocol for all women undergoing mammography.
